Intent: Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At Stratford-Sub-Castle, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art.

The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators.

Implementation: Planning a variety of creative and practical activities, we teach the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in the process of designing and making. The children work in a range of relevant contexts (for example home, school, leisure, enterprise).

Key skills and key knowledge for D and T have been mapped across the school to ensure progression between year groups.

The concepts for DT are:
  • DESIGN: use research, develop design criteria to inform, design appealing products that are aimed at particular individuals or groups. Generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas in a variety of ways.
  • MAKE: select from and use a wide range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks accurately. Select from and use a wider range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities
  • EVALUATE: evaluate a range of existing products, their own ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work. Understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world
  • TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE: apply understanding of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce structures. Understand and use mechanical systems in their products. Understand and use electrical systems in their products. Apply their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products

Impact:

The impact and measure of this is to ensure that pupils at Stratford-sub-Castle  are equipped with design technology skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world.

We want the pupils to engage and enjoy their DT learning to inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world, its history and its people; therefore encouraging them to undertake new life experiences now and in the future.
